Job Requirements
Original Entrance - Examination

Absolute Requirement: Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License, with endorsements for vehicles with air brakes, combination vehicles, hazardous materials and tanker vehicles.

Minimum Requirements: One year of experience driving a truck as a prime duty. SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of training in the operation of a truck at a recognized school may be substituted for the required experience on an hour-for-hour basis to a maximum of 320 hours (8 weeks).

Examination: The examination will consist of a written test weighted 30% and a performance test weighted 70%. The minimum passing score on each test will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to be eligible to compete in each subsequent test and to have their names placed on the eligible list.

The written test will assess candidates' knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as commercial driving rules and regulations; driving operations for light, medium and heavy trucks with power accessories; motor vehicle operating characteristics and routine maintenance requirements; methods and procedures for securing cargo including hazardous material handling; safety; reading and interpreting graphic aids, maps, signs and signals; and understanding and following written instructions.

The performance test will assess the candidate's ability to properly operate trucks with automatic and/or manual transmissions.

Examination Process: All applicants will be advised by email if they have been admitted to the examination process. Applicants who do not receive a response to their application by Friday, May 23, 2025 should contact the Employee Selection Office at (312) 751-5100.

WRITTEN TEST: The written test will be administered on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 W 111th Street, Chicago, IL 60655. Candidates should report at 9:00 a.m. with the approved (printed) admission letter AND will be required to show their Class A Commercial Driver's License with endorsements for vehicles with air brakes, combination vehicles, hazardous materials and tanker vehicles at the written test. The properly endorsed driver's license must be issued on or before May 2, 2025. Calculators will be provided. The use of books, study guides, cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops or other aids during the test is prohibited.

PERFORMANCE TEST: The performance test is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2025 and other dates that may be necessary to accommodate the number of candidates. Candidates who pass the written test will be informed by email regarding the date, time and place of the performance test.

Original Entrance - Appointments
Appointments will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified) and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. The eligible list has a duration of three years. Appointment is subject to successfully passing a physical examination, a drug test, an evaluation of the candidate's ability to meet the specific physical demands of the job and a criminal history background investigation.
