Temporary Property Management Assistant - May through August 2025

Salary: This is a temporary, hourly, non-exempt, non-benefited position. The is a 37.5 hour a week position with an anticipated hiring rate is $20-$22/hour commensurate with experience.

Location: Millbrook, NY

The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is an independent ecological research and educational organization located in New York’s Hudson Valley Region. While most of our grounds are set aside for field studies, parts of our campus are open for public education and enjoyment. We strive to preserve and protect our grounds while ensuring they serve and support our mission. The Temporary Property Management Assistant will help us fulfill our stewardship goals, while providing safe, sustainable access to our property, and be an environmental ambassador for visitors.

Position Overview

The Temporary Property Management Assistant will assist the Manager of Field Research and Outdoor Programs with the maintenance of the Cary Institute trails, access roads, Fern Glen Display and forestlands. The individual will assist with public environmental education and interpretive efforts. Qualified candidates must work independently and with others to perform duties including:

 ·Basic maintenance of hiking trails, foot bridges, unpaved roads and forested landscapes

· Safely operate hand tools and power equipment for landscape maintenance including pruning shears, shovels, wheelbarrows, blowers, string trimmer, chain saw, etc.

· Install, maintain and monitor native plant materials

· Monitor and manage invasive species using manual, mechanical, and chemical practices

· Maintain interpretive signs, kiosks and outdoor educational features

· Assist with on-site public education programs

· Interact with and provide guidance to volunteers and visitors on the grounds

· Perform other assigned duties

 

Education & Experience

· High school diploma, or its equivalent.

· Training in biology, conservation / environmental sciences or related field.

· Working knowledge of trail and landscape work is preferred.

 

Qualifications

· Interest in gaining real world experience with conservation and land management practices

· Must have a valid driver’s license

· Must be authorized to work in the US

· Must consent to a driving background check

 

Required Skills

· Strong interpersonal & communication skills

· High level of organization and attention to detail

· Competence with computers (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, cloud computing, etc.)

 

 

 Physical requirements

· Able to work outside in all types of weather and temperatures, and around insects, ticks and poison ivy

· Stand/walk for the majority of the work day

· Lift/move items weighing up to 50 lbs.
