Duties: Under supervision, performs skilled manual work in connection with the assembly, erection, fabrication and repair of architectural metal work for buildings or other structures.

Original Entrance - Examination

Minimum Requirements: Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in architectural ironwork or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Substitution: Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Examination: The examination will consist of a written test weighted 40% and a performance test weighted 60%. The minimum passing score on each test will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to be eligible to compete in each subsequent test and to have their names placed on the eligible list.

The written test will assess candidates' knowledge, skill and ability in the Ironworker trade in areas such as: principles and practices of Architectural ironwork; welding and cutting practices and techniques; usage of equipment and tools of the trade, including scaffolding and common hand and portable power tools used in the fabrication of metalwork; rigging techniques and crane hand signals used in loading and unloading materials/equipment; methods for determining basic rigging limitations and load weight calculations; fabrication of work products using sketches, blueprints and specifications; and occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

The performance test will assess candidates' skill in performing tasks in the ironworker trade.

Examination Process: All applicants will be advised by email if they have been admitted to the examination process. Applicants who do not receive a response to their application by Friday, March 21, 2025 should contact the Employee Selection Office at (312) 751-5100.

WRITTEN TEST: The written test will be administered on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 W. 111th St., Chicago, IL.

Candidates should report at 9:00 a.m. with the approved (printed) admission letter and driver's license or other form of photo identification. Calculators will be provided. The use of books, study guides, cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops or other aids during the test is prohibited.

PERFORMANCE TEST: The performance test is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 19, 2025 and any other dates that may be necessary to accommodate the number of candidates. Candidates who pass the written test will be informed by email regarding the date, time and place of the performance test.

Original Entrance - Appointments

Appointments will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified) and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. The eligible list has a duration of three years. Appointment is subject to successfully passing a physical examination, a drug test, an evaluation of the candidate's ability to meet the specific physical demands of the job and a criminal history background investigation.
