Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned)

Calpine is looking for an experienced Originator to join our team in Houston, TX. This person will bring immediate value to the team which is experiencing significant growth. Candidates should have demonstrated success in deal making, customer engagement and working with cross functional teams for project development initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

Deal Making

  • Responsible for strategic marketing and sales activities including identifying, developing, implementing, and closing structured transactions relating to the purchase and sale of both traditional and alternative power and natural gas related products and services.
  • Drive deal value and risk evaluation via engagement with structuring, finance, and trade desks
  • Develop products and services to increase market presence and meet customer demands.

Customer Engagement

  • Develop relationships with IPPs, power marketers, municipals, cooperatives, and other load serving entities. Support negotiation of master trading agreements with target customers.
  • Take "long game" view with customers, always prioritizing fair dealing and our long-term brand.
  • Attend and present at industry events to bolster the Calpine brand.

Cross Functional Support

  • Actively support new generation project development and existing project expansions.
  • Oversee contract implementation and related asset management after contracts have been executed.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and provide market intelligence regarding commodity pricing, supply/demand changes, and other factors that might impact the value of Calpine’s economic portfolio.
  • Illuminate and where possible mitigate risks - financial, legal, operational, regulatory.
Job Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in a in a business/analytical field of study
Advanced business acumen
ERCOT experience required
10 years minimum industry experience preferred
History of successful structured product transactions, including but not limited to PPAs, tolling contracts, load following deals, fuel supply arrangements, and renewable offtakes.
Demonstrated project or campaign management skills, including across organizational lines and with external parties.
Existing relationships across ERCOT load serving entities.
Effectively communicates with and secures approval from executive leadership for proposed transactions; adept at driving consensus and managing multiple levels of delegated transaction authority
Works effectively across organizational lines exerting influence via both formal and informal approaches.
Broad knowledge of power plant operations and wholesale power market constructs.
Ideal candidate will be hired at a level commensurate with experience.
