Summary Objective
The purpose of this appointed position is to manage the agency’s media relations and public information. Writes, edits, and designs print material such as speeches, newsletters, brochures, fliers, invitation and event programs, other informational materials, and news releases. Responsible for all web-based content for the department.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Manages media response, including news releases, on-call duties, research.
  • Creates, prepares and edits newspapers, brochures, and pamphlets in preparation for publishing.
  • Responds to requests from media.
  • Responsible for daily contact with social media, as well as involvement in community-oriented agency projects.
  • Collaborates with agency staff and assists in the development of print and electronic informational materials, such as promotional materials, speeches, and prepares and participates in agency community projects.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with electronic and print news media.
  • Responsible for the preparation and distribution of agency news releases.
  • Participates in agency recruitment and community relations activities as directed.
  • Assists in the design and maintenance of the agency’s internal and external websites, and social media accounts.
  • Utilizes various social media to communicate information regarding agency programs and services.
  • Assists with Open Records requests.
  • Participates in the Mayor’s communication meetings
  • Performs related work as assigned.

 
Job Requirements
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related discipline.
One (1) years of journalism, communications or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT):
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Required to be on-call 24hours.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
